Dear Parents and Guardians,
We had yet another busy week in Dragon class! Our field trip to the CA Academy of Sciences last Tuesday was a big hit with the students. I saw and heard so many excited oooh's and aaah's from the class throughout the day, and we spent the rest of the week discussing and writing about what we learned at the museum. The trip would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful chaperones...a HUGE thank you to Chris (Athena), Dan (Kali), Joy (Arthur), and Sidney and Cathy (Tiffany)!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES: STONE SOUP
This week, we read the first part of Stone Soup and started planning out our own Dragon class soup for next Tuesday. We will take turns adding our pre-cut veggies into the pot. Each student will need only a small amount (about 1 cup), so please do not bring too much! If you have not yet signed up to bring in a vegetable, please do so here.
For the Stone Soup activity, we will also need a gas or electric tabletop burner (like a camp stove or hotpot burner). If you have one and can lend it to us on Tuesday, please email me asap to let me know. Thank you!

SCIENCE: RAINFORESTS
In conjunction with our field trip, we spent the week learning about rainforests. We used a hands-on lab to explore the method and purpose of animal camouflage, and created our own camouflage drawings. We also discussed animal adaptations by using different types of bird "beaks" (tongs = hornbill, nutcracker = macaw, straw = hummingbird, tweezers = swiftlet) to gather various types of food. I saw students coming up with lots of creative methods throughout the lab!

MATH: 3-D SHAPES
In math, we are learning about 3-D shapes. The vocabulary can be a bit difficult at the beginning, so please practice at home with your child if possible. All of the words can be found here. The students worked in teams to complete a 3-d shape scavenger hunt in the playground. I'll be asking students to search for 3-d shapes at home soon, so start looking around to see what you can find!
